Just when the caterpillar

Thought the world was over

It became a butterfly

  • Valerie O’ Brien was born in Cork where she lived with her mother, father and four sisters before embarking on a career in the Irish Defence Forces in 1996.  Both her father and grandfather served in the army so it was inevitable that she herself would join up. She went on to become one of the first female combat soldiers in Ireland. Valerie served in both Lebanon and Eritrea with the Irish Defence Forces which motivated her to write her first book, "In the Shadow of Men - Is the Army any place for women". Along the way Valerie embarked on motherhood and now has two children.
  • Having served in the Defence Forces for over ten years in extremely challenging times Valerie experienced a number of challenges herself which she has since overcome. Valerie has a wide set of experiences which has brought her to where she is now.  Based on these experiences Valerie also delivers talks and seminars aimed at facilitating women towards change.
  • Her seminars help to motivate women to understand who they are, what influences have shaped their personalities whilst giving them the tools to move forward with an attitude of hope.
  • Valerie currently lives in County Kildare with her two children where she values every moment she spends with them. She is currently working on her second book.
